Conasauga District

The Conasauga District encompasses the counties of Whitfield and Murray. It has three school districts: Whitfield County, Murray County and Dalton City containing at total of 37 schools. The district is predominantly rural with the largest populations in Dalton followed closely by Chatsworth in Murray County. Economically the two counties are very diverse. The textile industry is a major draw and employer for both counties; and they include Mohawk, Shaw and Beaulieu.

The area is rich in history and diversity, with a wealth of Civil War sites and deep Cherokee Indian roots as well. Railroads played a major role in the area’s development, and among other historical footnotes, the district is known for it’s role in the Great Locomotive Chase of Civil War fame, as well as the starting point for Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign. Conasauga has a long Scouting history as well, with the first troop in Dalton being organized in 1911. The original charter for this troop, along with a troop picture, hangs in the Dalton Service center
